To encounter Matthew Fox in writing or in person is to be exposed to high-level scholarship, an incredible variety of stories and life experiences, his sharp wit and sense of humor, and potentially the most spiritually liberating learning experience one can have.
Matthew Fox was born December 21, 1940 in Madison, Wisconsin. He currently resides in Oakland, California. Formerly a Catholic priest and presently an Episcopal priest, Fox is arguably the most important theologian of our time. He is certainly amongst the most controversial. A spiritual theologian and religious scholar, he has dedicated much of his life to developing/recovering the tradition of Creation Spirituality.
Along with his articulation of the Four Paths, Original Blessing, Art-as-meditation, Deep Ecumenism, Panentheism, the Reinvention of Work, and other principles of Creation Spirituality, Fox has pulled together virtually every aspect of life on this planet and in the Universe to create the most complete, real-life, practical spirituality imaginable. World religions; indigenous wisdom and spirituality; insights of modern science; education and pedagogy; work; play; sexuality; grief and loss; modern technology; contemporary and ancient music, ritual and worship; art in its infinite forms and expressions; insights on sin and evil - all are gathered back together in harmonious, complimentary relationship under the umbrella of Fox's creation-centered spirituality.
One can learn much about Matthew Fox's life by reading his autobiography, Confessions: The Making of a Post Denominational Priest. Not surprisingly much has happened in Matthew's life and work since the 1996 publication of Confessions. We invite you to find out what his latest projects are; he usually has several in the works at any given time.
The best introduction to Matthew Fox's work is his seminal work, Original Blessing, as well as Creation Spirituality: Liberating Gifts for the Peoples of the Earth. His many other books are mostly deeper treatments of the various topics in Creation Spirituality.
